Delaware House: Merging Art Deco with Sustainability

Nestled in the heart of downtown Burlington, the Delaware House stands as a testament to timeless design and thoughtful renovation. Built in the 1920s, this charming home was ready for an update as the homeowners prepared for their last daughter to leave the nest. They envisioned a future in their beloved home that blended both comfort and style, making it a place they could enjoy for many more years. Their main goal for the renovation was to refresh the main floor, integrating modern comforts while honoring the home’s original character.

The homeowners desired a space that felt light, airy, and imbued with a whimsical vibe, yet they were also committed to reducing their environmental impact. To achieve this, we focused on preserving and enhancing existing features wherever possible. The home's structural integrity was maintained, along with the beautiful handmade terrazzo countertops and the original flooring, which simply needed refinishing and repolishing to restore their former glory. Additionally, the decision to reupholster the existing sectional and other upholstered furniture not only prevented these quality pieces from ending up in a landfill but also aligned perfectly with the owners' sustainable ethos.

Our design strategy was to create a curated environment that reflects the homeowners’ love for art, beauty, and the interplay of new and old elements. Given the house's 1920s origins, incorporating Art Deco influences was an essential touch that added an authentic historical layer to the design. It was crucial for each piece selected to resonate with the homeowners, ensuring that nothing felt out of place or excessive. The homeowner recognized the value of taking time to find just the right pieces, emphasizing that the home should not be filled hastily with items but should gradually come together in a meaningful way.

Delaware House is more than just a structure; it’s a celebration of its historical roots and the personal journey of its inhabitants. This project highlights how homeowners don’t need to start from scratch to achieve a harmonious and curated living space. By taking the time to understand their own preferences, the stories they wish to tell, and the essence of the house itself, anyone can create a personalized and cohesive home environment. The Delaware House stands as a beautiful example of how thoughtful design can breathe new life into an old space, making it ready for the next chapter while preserving its cherished past.
