As we continue to grow our business and learn, we will work hard to further evolve these initiatives.

Sustainable Tips We Always Follow;

Following the 5 R’s of the Circular Economy- rethink, redesign, reduce, reuse, & recycle

Pre Construction (4-6 months prior)

  • Rethink: Before you renovate your space, rethink how you’re currently using your principle spaces. Can you use a space in a different way? Can the rooms become multi-functional?

  • Reuse: Make a list of items in your space that can be reused by yourself or someone else. Start to make connections to organizations in your community that could take the items (Habitat for Humanity, Facebook Marketplace, Reuse are some), sell them or refinish them. This process takes time to organize so, it’s important to give yourself time at this step.

  • Reduce: If you’re renovating a house that’s 1970’s or older and you have plans already, reach out to a deconstruction company to quote instead of demolition. This process can be more expensive, but the products that are extracted can be sold for profit. There’s lots of materials in your house that are very valuable (wood, metal etc.)

  • Rethink: Make sure to get an asbestos test on your house prior to construction! Exposure is harmful to humans and the environment even after it’s been taken from your house if it’s not properly disposed of.

Construction

  • Recycle: Everything that goes in the giant bins finds itself in landfill. Be sure to arrange with the contractor a separate bin or method for large scale recycling.

  • Reuse: Instead of replacing easy to replace items, consider reusing them. For example: finish wood floors instead of tearing them out, tubs in bathrooms, sinks, faucets, trim, doors.

  • Rethink: Use all non-voc paints for painting

  • Rethink: Choose products that are made of recycled or natural materials that can easily be recycled in the future or decompose, or long lasting. For example: Cork, FSC approved wood, marmoleum flooring, wool carpet, or carpets made from recycled materials, wood cabinetry instead of MDF and particle board.

Furniture Installation

  • Recycle: recycle all the packaging materials from the furniture

  • Reuse: repurpose furniture and accessories in new places in your house. Refinish them if necessary.

  • Rethink: Purchase furniture and pieces that are going stand the test of time from durability, and style and have the ability to be fixed.

  • Reduce: Choose blinds for your windows that reduce UV rays and decrease heat absorption and loss.

  • Rethink: Choose OEKO-Tex and organic and natural materials for pillows, window treatments, bedding. Choose washable fabrics for upholstery wherever possible to increase the lifespan of your furniture.
