Outdoor Living: Let’s Get the Party Started

I don’t know about you, but as the weather starts to improve I can’t help but get excited about spending more time outdoors. Eating outside with my friends and family, lounging around and reading a book, enjoying a glass of wine as the sun begins to set. This vision is putting me in a happy place, especially after spending so much time cooped up in the house with COVID and winter before that.

With the changes in our world due to COVID, we ended up having to cancel our big trip this summer to Europe with the kids. I must admit, I understand that this is must, but it truly bummed me out. Especially after having planned this trip for over a year. So, doing it ‘Beth’ Fashion, I have decided that I need to create a little spark of  joy to our summer. What better way than to decorate our exterior space to get ready for entertaining when social distancing lifts. I don’t know about you, but I need to look forward to something. If travel isn’t going to happen this summer, then why not re-design? So, I have been doing some research and I am here to share with you the trends for 2020 to help get your space entertaining ready too.

Here you go…

  1. Rattan is back! I can’t tell you how excited I am that rattan is back in style! I have serious nostalgia for rattan from growing up in the 80’s. I can feel some of you cringing with this thought. Rattan reminds you of reruns of Three’s Company or your grandma’s backyard. I am happy to say that the rattan trends are very modern and most exterior rattan is made of a UV resistant material that will withstand sun and rain exposure. One of my fav lines that I came by was the Nest Line by Hauser.

  2. Soft blues, pinks and greens are the colours for this season. I used to shy away from light colours because of them getting dirty quickly. As a lover of red wine, having 3 kids who wear lots of suntan lotion, and  trees around us, I  always shied away from light colours because of staining. No need to anymore, with the fabulous washable Sunbrella fabrics that are on the market. Tip for you, you can actually take bleach to Sunbrella fabrics and they won’t fade! Just in case your exterior fabric isn’t Sunbrella, try this in a section that you can conceal just before going whole hog with the bleach.

  3. I don’t have a lot of storage space, with living in an old house. So, when I see comfy options without cushions, I gravitate towards them. Thank goodness cushionless designs have come back with a vengeance and the designers have created options that are lounge worthy.

  4. Having an outdoor kitchen for my husband has been a dream of his. Everything from an amazing bbq, a fridge, a sink and even a pizza oven have been on the top of his list. While this all sounds amazing, it’s just not in our budget. I have good news, there are amazing modular kitchens in white and black by Hauser that will do the trick and at a fraction of the cost!! Music to my ears!

  5. Wicker weaves are thinner again with exposed legs. Yep,  easier to clean, and with the furniture feeling less bulky, your space can’t help but feel larger. A win, win in my opinion especially when your exterior living space is on the smaller side. If you need a little ‘bulk’ or weight in your design and want the new wicker style, try incorporating a black version to your space.

  6. Solar lighting is a must. I can’t believe how far the lighting industry has come in this area. These lights are not only environmentally friendly, but they come in beautiful designs.  Stylish table and floor lamps for your exterior living space are all available now! Your outdoor living space can look and feel like your interior one!

There you have it! The top trends for 2020 outdoor living spaces. I had a blast checking out what is new and hot this season and wanted to share it with you. I am so excited to get this party started outside and begin entertaining again. That is when we are allowed to :)
